Life is something else, isn’t it? As a child, I never could have imagined actual life as an adult. These days, I’m feeling more appreciative of my parents and more amazed by those who go out each day, work full-time, and come home to take care of a family. Simply put, some days I have a hard time keeping myself in order.
But regardless of the hours you work, the size of your family or your number of dependents, I want to remind you to find a quiet place and get some rest.
“And he said unto them, ‘Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while:’ for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat. And they departed to a desert place by ship privately”-Mark 6:31-32
This was Jesus speaking to his disciples. Likewise, as children of God, it’s the consistent coming and going, with no leisure, that will wear us down. And yet, God would have us to go with him and Christ by ourselves to a quiet place and to get some rest.
It’s not hard to get lost in our 9-to-5s and the people we love; however, I hope I can make you aware of the importance in giving yourself some time, each day. I remember riding the NYC trains into work each day; I would look around and see people who looked miserable and zoned out. Granted, some people just aren’t morning people, but I get a sense that it is the “hustle” culture of adulthood that zaps people.
Just making it through a normal day is accomplishment enough to reward yourself by giving yourself some time. The “hustle” and “hustle hard” culture is aspirational, at times. However, quiet and rest is even more desirable.
May I remind you that hard work is commendable; however, by design, we are not made to continuously work at the expense of our spiritual, emotional, and physical wellness.
